In the early 1900s Chattanooga was a major railroad center, functioning as a connector between America’s largest cities. Boxcar uses this heritage as the basis for activating the underutilized space of urban alleyways. Our design deploys a series boxcars within the alley to provide a framework to support a variety of events. The boxcars are designed to be assembled using brightly painted panelized wood framing. This panelized design allows for off-site fabrication and easy transport to the project site. A perforated aluminum skin clads the boxcars, revealing the vibrant supporting structure and becoming beacons of activity within the city.
